In this study, we found that in addition to the CrAg screening of HIV-infected persons with a low CD4 T cell count, per WHO’s recommendations for preemptive fluconazole therapy, the CrAg screening of HIV-infected patients attending an emergency outpatient or internal medicine department irrespective of their CD4 T cell count can prevent the under diagnosis of cryptococcosis and its associated mortality in resource-limited settings. The gene discussed is CD4; the disease is cryptococcosis.
