Another characteristic of Tau pathology in AD is the progressive appearance of NFTs through the brain in a stereotypical anatomical pattern, which provides the basis for disease staging (Braak and Braak 1991): NFT pathology starts in the transentorhinal and entorhinal cortex (EC; Braak stages I and II) and progresses to the hippocampal formation (Braak stages III–IV).
