MAPT and Alzheimer disease: AD is caused by the formation of aggregates of polymerized forms of β-amyloid precursor protein (Aβ) in soluble multimeric and/or insoluble amyloid deposits in the brain that trigger a cascade of pathological events leading to neurofibrillary tangles, aggregates of hyperphosphorylated tau proteins, formation of neurofibrillary lesions, and ultimately dementia (Scheltens et al., 2016).
