After SORT1, the gene coding for sortilin, was linked to increased cardiovascular risk by genome-wide association studies (GWAS) as a possible gene locus, sortilin came into focus as an influencing factor in the development process of age-associated diseases, such as dyslipidemias, atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus type 2, and also Alzheimer’s disease [12,36,37,38,39]. This evidence concerns the gene SORT1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
