Abnormally low levels of SHBG are frequently observed in women with PCOS (especially in women with android obesity) and contribute to the symptoms of clinical hyperandrogenism observed in these patients by increasing the bioavailable (and therefore bioactive) fraction of circulating androgens (hirsutism, acne, androgenic alopecia) [52,53]. The gene discussed is SHBG; the disease is hyperandrogenism.
