Anemia due to chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterized by inadequate levels of erythropoietin (EPO) and leads to cardiovascular dysfunction [1, 2], reduced physical activity [3, 4], and impairs quality of life [5, 6], and is associated with increased hospitalization and mortality rates in both adults and children [7–9]. The gene discussed is EPO; the disease is anemia (phenotype).
