VEGFA and age-related macular degeneration: Bevacizumab (Avastin) is a large humanised monoclonal IgG1 antibody whose main action is inhibition of VEGF.9 Bevacizumab was first developed in 2004 to treat colorectal cancer, but in 2005 was approved as an intravitreal injection for the management of macular oedema associated with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and later retinal vein occlusion and diabetic retinopathy.
