UBE3A was originally named E6-associated protein (E6-AP) since the protein interacts with the E6 protein expressed by infected human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes cervical cancer, other anogenital cancers, and oropharyngeal cancers (Huibregtse et al., 1991; Munoz et al., 2003; Schiffman et al., 2005).
