Strikingly, shortly after the succession of nivolumab (anti‐PD1)–ipilimumab (anti‐CTLA4) as the first ICB combination treatment in advanced melanoma,[64] pairing of pembrolizumab (anti‐PD1) and platinum‐based chemotherapy in nonsmall lung cancer was granted FDA‐approval in 2017.[65] By eliciting an inflammatory response to dying cancer cells, a so‐called ICD, coadministered chemotherapeutics turned tumors from “cold” to “hot”, synergizing with ICB in unleashing a potent antitumor immune response. The gene discussed is CTLA4; the disease is cancer.
