IL-8, which can have both pro- and anti-inflammatory functions, has been less consistently identified in individuals with mood disorders (Kohler et al., 2018); however, elevated IL-8 has been suggested as an acute biomarker of a variety of psychiatric conditions (Gariup et al., 2015), as well as other chronic conditions (Shahzad et al., 2010). The gene discussed is CXCL8; the disease is mood disorder.
