We observed that WT mice administered unmethylated S100A8/A9 had significantly reduced local lesion areas and bacterial CFU loads in the abscess tissue compared to those of WT mice administered methylated S100A8/A9 and H107G mutated S100A8/A9 (Fig. 1N–P), indicating that His107 methylation indeed reduces anti-S. aureus function of S100A8/A9 in vivo. The gene discussed is S100A8; the disease is abscess.
