The mechanisms by which ACE2 gene variants could impact the structural and/or the catalytic activity of the gene product could be at the transcriptional (mRNA expression), post-transcriptional modifications (such as N-glycosylation), or ACE2 protein levels that influence the outcome of COVID-19 by acting on blood pressure through the RAS and possible impact on lung/heart damages through the Ang II-triggered oxidative stress [44].
