Jaundice (total bilirubin levels of 5 mg/dL or more) and coagulopathy (INR of 1.5 or more, or prothrombin activity of less than 40%) as a result of an acute hepatic insult which is complicated within 4 weeks by ascites, encephalopathy, or both.
