Indeed, malignant transformation of melanocytes, which originate from the neural crest, has been associated with the acquisition of melanoma-specific cell-surface epitopes, such as MCAM/CD146 and MSCP/NG2, (melanoma-associated chondroitin sulphate), as well as stem cell markers, such as ABCB5 (ATP-binging cassette subfamily member B) and CD271 [26,34,97,98]. This evidence concerns the gene MCAM and melanoma.
