Considering that high glucose levels, common in patients with T2DM, impairs the activity of HIF-1α (Thangarajah et al., 2010), EH could be particularly beneficial to improve angiogenesis in this population, because the low oxygen availability in EH further enhances the production of HIF-1α to a greater extent than when training under normoxia conditions (Lundby et al., 2009; Robach et al., 2007). This evidence concerns the gene HIF1A and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
