VEGFA and neoplasm: Among possible examples, the authors discussed the secretion of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) that triggers new blood vessels within the tumor (neo‐angiogenesis), whereby the diffused oxygen and nutrients would also benefit cells that did not secrete VEGF (unidirectional shared benefit); and the production and exchange of two different growth factors (by‐product mutualism; cross‐feeding) resulting in proliferative capabilities that neither of the subclones would attain on its own (see Box 2 for additional examples).
