Gene expression analysis in whole islets collected from healthy humans and patients with T2DM revealed a down-regulation of several m6A regulators in diabetic individuals – methyltransferase METTL14, demethylases FTO and ALKBH5, and readers YTHDF1 and YTHDF3. In addition to transcripts, protein levels of methyltransferases METTL3 and METTL14 were also decreased (65). Here, METTL3 is linked to type 2 diabetes mellitus.
