Alzheimer’s disease is a chronic neurodegenerative disease and the leading cause of dementia (Alzheimer’s Association, 2010); its precise pathogenesis is uncertain but involves neuroinflammation (Heneka et al., 2015), extracellular neuritic plaques comprised of misfolded amyloid-β peptides (Tiraboschi et al., 2004), and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles comprised of the microtubule-associated protein tau (Brion, 1998). This evidence concerns the gene MAPT and Alzheimer disease.
