In women with ovarian failure, shorter telomeres and reduced telomerase activity (TA) have been found in blood22 and granulosa cells (GCs).22,23 These women are usually exposed to lower doses of estrogens,22 which are known to activate telomerase.24,25 Aromatase-deficient mice show shortened TL and low telomerase levels along with ovarian dysfunction,26 and estrogen therapy reverses those symptoms.26 Thus, telomerase reactivation strategies may improve fertility through better telomere maintenance.
