With regard to age-related forms of neurodegeneration and Alzheimer’s disease in particular, it has been noted that the progression of cognitive decline monitored over a period of 6 years negatively correlates with the levels of BDNF mRNA quantified in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, in a large postmortem analysis involving over 500 patients (Buchman et al., 2016). This evidence concerns the gene BDNF and early-onset autosomal dominant Alzheimer disease.
