The distribution of neurons in the tumor microenvironment is affected by tumor secreted signals such as nerve growth factor (NGF) and Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).8,58 Interestingly, both NGF and BDNF are activated by CRE signaling through the cis-regulatory motifs.59,60 Therefore, CRE activation in cancer cells might activate neural associated factors that promote neurogenesis, thereby guiding the distribution of neurons to hijack the cellular reprogramming mechanism by which nervous system assisting tissue development and regeneration. The gene discussed is NGF; the disease is cancer.
