Tryptophan‐aspartate repeat domain 72 (WDR72) is highly expressed in the retina and kidney epithelium, and WDR72 variants were associated with changes in HbA1c in the intensive arm of the DCTT [64], making this gene a promising biological candidate for the risk of progression of diabetic retinopathy. Here, WDR72 is linked to diabetic retinopathy.
