The transient and mild hepatocellular injury can be explained by the study of Chai et al., demonstrating that ACE-2 receptors in the liver are expressed mostly in cholangiocytes and less in hepatocytes, suggesting that hepatocytes might not be targeted by the virus, or at least not through ACE-2, and probably the cytotoxic liver damage is caused by drugs or by the systemic inflammatory response induced by COVID-19 [33]. This evidence concerns the gene ACE2 and COVID-19.
