BCL2 and follicular lymphoma: It is localized in the outer mitochondrial membrane and exerts its antiapoptotic function by binding proapoptotic BCL2 family proteins such as BAX and BAC to prevent the release of cytochrome c from mitochondria in the intrinsic apoptosis pathway.8 The translocation is an early event in lymphomagenesis and although on its own likely insufficient, it plays an important role in follicular lymphoma pathogenesis.
