In 2018, the first published systematic review examining the effects of lower-carbohydrate diets (<45% TEI) for T1D management reported that the three included studies examining LC diets (<26% TEI; excluding case reports) achieved mean HbA1c reductions between 0.7–1.3% [20–23], and diets with ≤100 g/day of carbohydrates led to concurrent reductions in total daily insulin use [21–23]. Here, INS is linked to type 1 diabetes mellitus.
