PtpA is a secreted protein during infection; thus, it constitutes an ideal target for drug design (Bach et al., 2008; Sullivan et al., 2012; Wong et al., 2013; Wang et al., 2017) as the drugs would not need to cross the mycobacterial envelope, a barrier that explains much of the resistance of Mtb to antibiotics (Chiaradia et al., 2017; Abrahams and Besra, 2020).
