Hb did not differ between the two groups, but the proportion of those diagnosed with anemia was higher in the younger group (16% and 8.3%), although not significantly so; HbA1c was normally high in both groups (5.5%), and the proportion of those with HbA1c of 5.6% or higher in the younger and older group was 36% and 50%, respectively. This evidence concerns the gene GSTM1 and anemia (phenotype).
