Although FBS is used in current ATMP manufacture,6,29 there is an aim to minimize the use of xeno-products in ATMP manufacture, in accordance with the Note for Guidance on Minimizing the Risk of Transmitting Animal Spongiform Encephalopathy Agents via Human and Veterinary Medicinal Products (EMA/410/01 rev 3).30 Therefore, we have aimed to “future-proof” this study by investigating pooled hPL as a GMP-compliant, xeno-free alternative31 to FBS and testing its potential for use in upscale bioreactor manufacturing. The gene discussed is LGALS1; the disease is prion disease.
