APOE epsilon 4 carriers have a decreased risk of AMD as it enhances the mobility of cholesterol, lipid, and RPE degradation products across BrM, whereas APOE epsilon 2 increases the risk of AMD by amplifying the expression of vascular growth factor and fibroblast growth factor (FGF) in RPE cells [41-43]. The gene discussed is APOE; the disease is age-related macular degeneration.
