While MT4-MMP (MMP-17) is not universally upregulated through all cancer types as happens in other MMPs (such as MMP-1, MMP-9, MMP-10, MMP-11, MMP-13, and MMP-14), the study of the prognostic value of 24 MMPs in predicting overall survival in the 15 cancer types has revealed MT4-MMP along with MMP-14, and MMP-23B as the most frequently MMPs exclusively associated with poor prognosis when they are overexpressed in a particular cancer [33]. This evidence concerns the gene MMP17 and cancer.
