In a model of 6-OHDA-induced parkinsonism in Wistar rats, two intraperitoneal injections of carnosine (250 mg/kg) 1 day and 1 h prior to intrastriatal 6-OHDA injection significantly decreased the number of apomorphine-induced rotations (the test is commonly used for evaluating the development of parkinsonism in animal models), reduced apoptosis in the SNpc, and normalized malonic dialdehyde and nitrite concentrations along with catalase activity in the midbrain [15]. The gene discussed is CAT; the disease is Parkinson disease.
