In periodontal diseases, special attention has been paid to three collagenases (MMP-1, MMP-8, and MMP-13) and to the gelatinases (MMP-2 and MMP-9) because the major component of the ECM is collagen type I. All other MMPs (MMP-7, -12, -14) and proteases have relatively moderate effects in periodontitis [4]. The gene discussed is MMP8; the disease is periodontal disorder.
