Interestingly, a mutation in CCR5, CCR5∆32, truncates the receptor leading to lower membrane expression and degrees of resistance to infection both in vitro and clinically in two successful ∆32/∆32 bone marrow transplantations in which the patients showed no viral rebound despite cessation of ART (Hütter et al., 2009). The gene discussed is CCR5; the disease is infection.
