Pathological and neuroimaging (magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET)) studies have consistently identified three subtypes of AD based on the regional distribution of tau neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) or pattern of brain atrophy: typical AD, limbic-predominant AD, and hippocampal-sparing AD [18–20].
