Molecular studies have characterized that the pathological hallmark of PD is misfolded protein aggregation (Lewy body) mainly composed of α-synuclein (α-SYN), which is coded via the SNCA gene in dopaminergic neurons in substantia nigra (SN) of PD patients (Dodel et al., 2008; Panicker et al., 2021). Here, SNCA is linked to Parkinson disease.
