With regard to oncovirus-related cancers, MAL promoter methylation and downregulation [87] correlated with the development of CESC, which is caused by persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus, suggests that MAL could be used as a diagnostic biomarker to reduce errors and misjudgment in the analysis of biopsies and scrapings [160] and to predict the severity of the cancer [161,162,163,164].
