It has been reported that, although elevated serum levels of MMP-9 in patients with acute ischemic stroke are positively correlated with poor stroke outcomes in the first 24 h after onset of symptoms (Abdelnaseer et al., 2017), the serum MMP-9 level after 1 month of stroke could serve as a positive predictor of stroke recovery beyond the acute stage (Abdelnaseer et al., 2017). This evidence concerns the gene MMP9 and stroke disorder.
