Whilst the pathophysiology underpinning any relationship between adiposity and glaucoma is as of yet unclear, some authors have suggested that elevated levels of hormones such as ghrelin, oestrogen and leptin in those with higher BMI might have neuroprotective effects, or that elevated cerebrospinal fluid pressure in those with greater body fat may reduce the translaminar pressure gradient and thus counteract the effects of raised IOP28. Here, LEP is linked to glaucoma.
