Patients with liver cirrhosis and splenomegaly who are assessed for surgical treatment should routinely be tested for prothrombin time (PT), prothrombin activity (PTA), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), thrombin time (TT), and fibrinogen (Fib) upon hospital admission [1–3] to assess disease progression and guide treatment decisions [4, 5].
