Numerous studies have demonstrated that HSV-1 induces AD-related pathological changes contributing to neuronal loss and brain atrophy, such as neuroinflammation and oxidative stress, autophagy and lysosomal impairment, tau hyperphosphorylation, accumulation of intracellular β-amyloid (Aβ), blood–brain barrier disruption, and DNA damage, as reviewed in [6]. This evidence concerns the gene MAPT and Alzheimer disease.
