Although the regulatory impact of aberrant DNAme on gene regulation in ADPKD is not well understood, the Pkd1 gene has been found to be demethylated by the DNA methyltransferase inhibitor (DNMTi) 5-aza-2′-deoxycytidine (or Aza), resulting in decreased cystogenesis in vitro, suggesting that DNAme could be a complementary target in ADPKD.9 The gene discussed is PKD1; the disease is autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.
