In a prospective multicenter cohort study on 721 patients (adults and children) undergoing cardiac surgery, urinary MMP-7 predicted moderate to severe AKI and was associated with a composite outcome for severe AKI, dialysis, and death, outperforming other biomarkers, including proteinuria or neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), with an ROC-AUC of 0.81 in children and 0.76 in adults [41]. The gene discussed is MMP7; the disease is acute kidney injury.
