SLC6A3 and Lewy body dementia: As DAT immunoreactivity in the midbrain is highest in the SN20, and DAT is expressed exclusively in the dopaminergic neurons13,14, loss of dopaminergic neuronal density21, decrease of DAT messenger RNA22–24, or internalization of autoregulatory DAT from the dendritic membranes15 as a response to dysfunctional axon terminal in the striatum may explain the decreased nigral DAT uptake in patients with DLB.
