(35–39) Clinical data has also indicated that pro-inflammatory biomolecules like PGRN are overexpressed in the serum of patients with severe COVID-19, and it is believed that this overexpression contributes to the mass overexpression of ILs through a positive feedback loop.(40) Cycles of uncontrolled inflammation, triggered by the cooperative activation of both IL-6 and PGRN, are considered to be major factors in the initiation and progression of the cytokine storm in severe COVID-19 and can be linked to a loss of translational regulation.(35–38,41). This evidence concerns the gene IL6 and COVID-19.
