CD14 and cerebral small vessel disease: Increased plasma concentrations of LPS and soluble CD14, both markers of gut dysbiosis and compromised intestinal integrity, were identified in healthy individuals showing cognitive decline,43 whereas in a recent hospital‐based cohort study, higher plasma LPS concentration indicated cognitive decline and cerebral small vessel disease, including WMLs, and was correlated with low fecal concentrations of beneficial microbial metabolites including lactic and acetic acid.44
