Galectin-3, a member of the galectin family, has many biological functions involved in cell growth, apoptosis, differentiation, inflammation, fibrosis, and the pathogenesis of autoimmune and inflammatory processes [36]. Galectin-3 expression levels were significantly increased in tumor tissue and serum, and in vitro and in vivo studies indicated that galectin-3 can facilitate hepatoma cell proliferation and reduce apoptosis among these cells [37].
