Brookes and colleagues were among the first to demonstrate increased expression of iron uptake proteins and increased iron storage in CRC in comparison with normal colorectal mucosa, with CRC samples presenting a higher expression of duodenal cytochrome B ferrireductase (DCYTB), divalent metal transporter-1 (DMT1), and TfR1, along with increased iron content [74]. The gene discussed is TFRC; the disease is colorectal carcinoma.
