The hallmark neuropathologies of AD are the accumulation of extracellular amyloid β (Aβ) plaques (Thal et al., 2002) and the formation of intracellular neurofibrillary tangles (tau proteins) in the neurons (Braak and Braak, 1991), both causing degeneration and death of nerve cells in the brain (Bloom, 2014).
