The cytokine storm associated with severe COVID-19 is characterized by high levels of proinflammatory cytokines, including interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-2, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF), C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 10 or granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), among others [5, 6].
