White adipose tissue is an endocrine organ regulating secretion of adipokines and cytokines, such as leptin, adiponectin, and proinflammatory cytokines.14 In obesity, the secretion of proinflammatory adipokines is increased, resulting in systemic low-grade inflammation.15,16 These adipokines and proinflammatory cytokines may influence structural and functional changes in the brain.15 However, associations between other inflammatory factors, such as C-reactive protein (CRP) level, and cognitive function among people with obesity are inconsistent. The gene discussed is ADIPOQ; the disease is obesity due to melanocortin 4 receptor deficiency.
